The history of Bakersfield can be traced back to 1849 when it was founded as an agricultural community by Hyrum C. Smith and his brothers on Rancho del Norte south of what is now Downtown Bakersfield. In 1850, the town was named for John Fergus Baker, an Irishman who had come to California during the Gold Rush to prospect for gold near Sacramento. In 1856, when most of southern Kern County were annexed by Los Angeles, Bakersfield remained unincorporated and continued to be known as "John Fergus Baker's Town." In 1868, George Wells Fargo arrived in town with his wagon train and founded the First National Bank. At this time Bakersfield had a population of around 150 people. In 1886, three friends—Orlando Thomas (1858-1925), Harry Kendall (1859-1937) and Sidney Skelton (1860-1945)—founded what would become one of Kern County's most successful small businesses: The Kents coffee shop on State Street which became one of the first commercial enterprises in town and remains open today. Their success led them to buy other businesses and create The Kents Coffee Company which served coffee from precooked beans until 1978; two store fronts remain extant today on Commerce Boulevard east of downtown; one on State Street west of downtown; all but one store front have been demolished since then. During World War II, many local companies produced materials for military production such as munitions manufacturing or aircraft parts including Munitions Manufacturing Company (later Air Marshall Corporation) which built numerous fighter planes including Boeing 707s for USAAF use; also located in downtown Bakersfield was Wernher Von Braun’s Rocketdyne Laboratories where he developed America’s first operational ballistic missile program – DARTM1 – during World War II Baker Field Commercial Airport opened in 1942 adjacent to Wernher von Braun’s Rocketdyne Laboratories campus - becoming home turf for both the Army Air Forces Flying Training Command (AFTC) flying training schools operated out of nearby Wright-Patterson AFB from 1945 untilactivated by USAF in 1969 ; again ,AFTC/Wright Patterson AFB flew trainers into intermediate altitudes over Southern California daily from 1948 until withdrawn from USEF control due to budget cuts following Desert Storm . prewar aerial photos depict large number OF Douglas AAF bombers stationed at(?)baker field concurrent with AFTC flying training activity there .. prior thereto there were only a few single engine piston fighters deployed at bfk facility .. no evidence exists that any combat sorties took place while bfk facility was active Today's skyline view looking northeast towards Downtown Fresno shows twin towers next to ARCO refinery visible just beyond ridge line.. this area used to include extensive cotton farming & blacksmithing operations adjoining Cotton Belt region
Bakersfield was founded by George Baker in 1847 as a dry goods store. The first post office in Bakersfield was established in 1852. By 1860, the city had a population of about 25,000 people. In 1870, Bakersfield became the first city in California to have an electric streetlight system. In 1907, Bakersfield became the capital of Kern County.
