Bakersfield is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 153,831 as of the 2010 census. Its name comes from the Bakersfield River. It became a city on February 15, 1887. Bakersfield's history goes back to 1853 when it was founded as an agricultural town about 25 miles (40 km) east of downtown Los Angeles by brothers George and Jesse Wesson. The townsite was named for Samuel Baker, an early settler who lived near present-day Encinitas and fought in the Mexican-American War before moving to Bakersfield in 1848. A post office called Bakerfield was established in 1853, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1880, John Sledge developed what is now downtown Bakersfield; he named it Sledge City after his father-in-law William Sledge, who had served as mayor of Los Angeles at the time. In 1840s and 1850s there were several gold mines operating in what is now Kern County; these mines yielded valuable nuggets that were picked up by local miners and turned into coins or jewelry pieces known as "baking powder" or "gun mags." Mining operations ended around 1870 due to lack of ore and competition from other regions such as Nevada and California's Central Valley. However, some mining activity continued until about 1910 when all new gold discoveries stopped due to high costs associated with extracting large amounts of metal from small rocks without any beneficiation steps (see also: Gold rush). A few years later on May 3rd 1860 US soldiers burned down a storehouse west of today's downtown Bakersfield after learning that gun mag owners had been stockpiling weapons there illegally (see also: Gun confiscation). Needless to say things didn't improve much thereafter until late November 1862 when hostilities ended following Appomattox Court House Massacre wherein Confederate general Robert E Lee surrendered instead turning Over all southern CAVIL sections TO THE Ulysses S Grant Expedition!
