The party of thirteen men set out from Boston on July 4th, 1847, led by Captain John Sutter, sailed upriver to reach bear creek before nightfall; they arrived safely at their destination early morning of July 5th. A few weeks later, they erected for themselves a log cabin with six rooms and a kitchen on land given them by Mr. Briggs; it became known as bearsville (laterBear Creek). At this time there were no water sources within walking distance so villagers relied upon horseback or wagon transportation to get any supplies they needed. In 1850s some Germans moved into what would become Bakersfield from central California and started a bakery business called Deutschlandhausen bakery which was open until 1925 next door to where Kaiser's Cafeteria now stands

It became an important manufacturing center during the Gold Rush period in the 1860s and 1870s. In 1915, Baker Field, which is now part of UC Berkeley's campus, was established in downtown Bakersfield as the first major American air base outside of North America.
