Bakersfield is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 181,048 as of the 2010 census. It is the third most populous city in Kern County and the most populous city east of the San Joaquin Valley. The 2014 estimated population for Bakersfield was to be 246,405 making it the fastest-growing city in Kern County. The area that now makes up Bakersfield was first populated by Native Americans and Missionaries during the 18th century. A rancho was granted to Francisco Xavier Menard de Haro in 1795. In 1825, Alvarado imported 20 acres (8 ha) of what would later become downtown Bakersfield from Mexico City and named it Haro Ranch after him. A year later, he sold his interest in Haro Ranch to James Wolkentin for $1,000 cash and 10 miles (16 km) of wagon road. Wolkentin founded Wolkentin & Company which became one of America's leading agricultural merchants; he also served as speaker of the California Assembly from 1834-1836 and 1840-1846. In 1851, John Sutter arrived at Haro Ranch with twelve men on horseback to found Sutterville after purchasing some land from Wolkentin. By 1870, there were 1 million people living in Los Angeles County and only 350 people residing within five miles (8 km) of Downtown Los Angeles; by 1900 there were over 15 million people living within ten miles (16 km) of Downtown Los Angeles In 1861–62 Captain George Armstrong extended an invite to all Mormons who had come west since Mormon Book Week began on April 6th had come into compliance with all laws regulating slavery then existing including taking an oath not to testify against their brethren before a grand jury or giving evidence against them while they still resided among those who professed allegiance thereto – any such person being then holding himself free under God’s law Mormons refused this invitation but rather took up arms against Ulysses S Grant over control of Utah Territory

The discovery of oil in 1901 led to dramatic growth for Bakersfield and its surrounding areas during World War I and World War II; however, rapid industrialization later caused significant pollution and loss of jobs in local industries such as papermaking, printing and plastics production. However, recent economic development has led to renewed interest in industry within the downtown core while also bringing new services such as restaurant chains dotting the urban landscape outside of downtowns main business districts such as East Village/West Village or North Avenue/Pine Hollow Road.
