In 1916 Goodyear opened its largest plant outside North America when it built a plant on State Route 99 in nearby Vernon Hills – still one of North America’s most significant industrial sites outside of Detroit or Cleveland – followed by two other plants at John Day Lake (later renamed Riverside) and acres southeast of Sacramento along I-5 (now known as Old US Highway 99). These plants produced milk products for local farmers until about 1970 when they switched to production of automobile parts using new technology then known as “ Molding Technology .”
