During World War I: while America fought abroad; Bakersfall[sic] produced more than $1 million worth of munitions for the war effort alone. Many American citizens made their home here after serving in World War 1; such as William Pyle who served two terms as Mayor before retiring in 1933 . The city also produced oil products such as asphalt and kerosene for use by automobile manufacturing plants across Southern California. After World War II Bakersfield experienced rapid growth as a result of new industrial development along with increasing suburbanization; however certain core sectors of its economy have remained relatively stagnant including heavy industry which has led to high unemployment rates since 2000 The current mayor is Kevin Faulconer who was elected on December 6th 2009
