In 1916–1917, World War I caused a dramatic increase in immigration to California as many Germans fled Austria for fear of violence there after Austria sponsored a nationalist uprising against Habsburg rule. During World War II more than 60% of Bakersfields population were military veterans who had served in Pacific theater or European theater of war such as Normandy or Italy; they were some of only 1% of Californias population who did not have any formal job training before enteringthe workforce. After V-E Day (Sept 9th 1945), most veterans turned their attention back to their homesickness wrought by months away from family and friends that ended up lasting years as they awaited news of their loved ones back home. In 1902, two brothers - Orville Hurlbut and Wilbur Hurlbut - founded Hurlbut Rubber Company on Main Street (now Orchard Road) just outside downtown Bakersfield proper; this company became one of largest rubber companies in the world and remains active today with assets valued at $3 billion USD
