Azusa is a town in Los Angeles County, California. It was founded by Americans early in the 20th century as a small farming community on the east side of Pasadena. The population was 67 at the 2000 census. The name Azusa comes from Spanish "azúcar" meaning "syrupy sweet substance." The first settler, John Smeaton, named his new town after himself and his wife's hometown, Azusa, California. In 1887, azure blue water became available for irrigation around Azusa Creek and soon businesses began to grow up along its banks. In 1929 the Asphalt Board of America was organized in Azusa and quickly became one of Southern California's most important industry with production facilities near downtown Azusa and at two large anodized aluminum plants north of town on State Route 187. The city annexed portions of neighboring El Monte in 1951 to form a new municipality with an estimated population then of 80,000 people including over 20% Japanese American citizens during World War II. After years of growth and development led by First Lady Betty Ford who championed arts and culture as well as housing developments for low-income residents (the Betty Ford Homes), todayazusa boasts significant shopping malls (Citrus Heights mall/Target; Valley View Village; Eastridge Village) as well as multiple professional sports teams including the Lakers (1940s), Clippers (1970s), Angels (2000s) as well as several colleges such as Claremont Graduate University which is located close to downtown azusa Thanks to North Hollywood Boulevard which bisects azua east-west it has always been able to boast excellent driving weather conditions year round despite occasional summer days where temperatures can top 100 degrees Fahrenheit! A brief history of Azusa, California begins with the arrival of Spain in 1769. The following year, a group of Alvarado Indians set out from Mission San Gabriel to explore what is now southern California. They discovered a vast area that would become known as Rancho Santa Anita. In 1824, Mexican cattle ranchers founded the town of Azusa on the east bank of the San Gabriel River. The first order of business forAzusa Mayor Manuel Nieto was to clear land for a new sawmill and market square. The next year, he1 built first school in Azusa and also began construction on what would become the city hall and city Jail. By 1830, Azusa had two churches and several homespun stores. It was an agricultural community which depended heavily upon irrigation water from underground sources near present-day downtown Azusa. In 1851, azusa voters elected John Sutter as their second mayor after incumbent Manuel Nieto resigned due to term limits prescribed by Mexico City law at that time. Mr. Sutter quickly established himself as one of the most influential men in early 19th century California through his involvement in politics and business ventures in both Arizona Territory and Sonora County,. Sutter played an important role in helping to found Fresno University and later UC Berkeley; he also donated land for Measure B (the original Airport) adjacent to his home on Valley View Avenue today's Old TownAzusa Historic District
Azusa was founded in 1877 by Japanese immigrants, most of whom were farmers. The town grew quickly and soon had a population of over 100 people. In 1906, Azusa became the site of the first interracial wedding in California.
