The first Europeans to visit what is nowAzusa were Spanish missionaries who established ranchos there between 1776 and 1781. Missions such as Santa Clara de Asis (1777), Mission San Gabriel Arcángel (1784), and Mission San José Rey (1821) helped spread Christianity to many areas south of Mexico City. By 1810, Mexican land grants had been made totaling 653 square miles (1,500 km2). Most of these grants were given to rancho owners who used them for grazing their herders' livestock and farming crops such as wheat and cotton. WhenCalifornian Governor Manuel Nieto arrived in 1836 he ordered all land grants be Reduced from 1 million acres to 500 square miles because he felt that much of this area lay idle or under-developed due to a lack of development impetus emanating from Mexico City itself! In 1847montgomery Calhoun gave azusa an addition 2 blocks east on Main Street which still bears his name today: Montgomery Calhoun Elementary School & Community Center
Azusa (formerly East Azusa) was a small farming community in southwestern Los Angeles County, California. It was located on the east side of present-day Azusa Creek immediately north of the city of Azusa and south of Glendale. The name "East Azusa" is derived from two Spanish words: azúcar (a sugarcane juice) and ussa (an Old Testament term for "Isreal"). The first Europeans to visit East Azusa were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and his crew on November 7, 1542. They sighted land to the north and west which they later named Santa Catalina Island after Lady Catalina of Spain who had sheltered them during their voyage. In 1602, Father Francisco de Garza led an expedition to inland San Gabriel Valley where he founded Mission San Gabriel Arcángel. On October 12, 1776, Mexican Captain Antonio Lopez Menéndez anchored off what is now the eastern end of East Azusa creek as part of his punitive expedition against Anglo settlers for raiding Mexican cattle herds during the Rancho Verde campaign. Upon landing here he discovered that the area had been ceded by Mexico to England as part of boundary negotiations following independence from Spain. The Englishmen called this site "Eastazuma". On May 10, 1875, Alameda County became independent from California when it was organized as a separate county pursuant to Proposition 66. At that time, all Native American reservations in Los Angeles County were abolished and their lands became part of Alameda County - including East Azusa Creek which consequently became part of Oakland Unified School District territory. In 1968-1969, Measure B was passed by voters in Alameda County in order to provide funding for new schools in Oakland Unified School District territory which at that time included much of east Oakland including Eastazuma Creek - making it one school district within another school district once again! In 2000-2001 there was Measure I passed by voters in Alameda County follwing a proposal from then Superintendent Dianne Feinstein requesting funds for renovation/updates at many Angelenos'favorite public schools including those located near our creek - making our creek once again one school district within another school district!
