Azusa is a city in the San Joaquin Valley of California, United States. It was founded by brothers Charles and Jesse Azusa in 1887 as an agricultural town on the east side of the San Joaquin River. The name Azusa comes from Spanish for "west coast." The population was 43,442 at the 2010 census. The Azusa district includes most of downtown and much of south central Azusa, including parts of Westridge Elementary School, Northridge High School, and Holyoke Middle School. Midtown azusa is home to many commercial businesses that are clustered near State Street NW and Broadway NE. The land around present-day Azusa was first settled by Native Americans who hunted game here during winter months. In 1847, Mexican settlers arrived and named the area Nueva Cana after General Jose Alvarado's cavalry unit which had stopped at this site while besieging Stockton. After Mexico's fall in 1848, American settlers began arriving here too and named the area Agua Caliente because it seemed warm enough in summertime. This geographic naming convention continued until about 1860 when government surveys began listing all settlements by their location on maps instead of just their name followed by a number (as with today). By 1870 there were over 100 towns in California and most were given new names based upon their location or some other distinguishing feature (e.g., West Hillsborough for Rancho Tejon). In 1887, Charles and Jesse Azusa founded what would become known asAzusatown; it included most of downtown with its five blocks between First Street SW and Second Street SW (now blocked off by properties occupied by Midtownazus business districts). After years of struggles, including several fires that destroyed much property in central Azusa and throughout 1850-1852, Captain David Jones donated land at what is now Eastlake Boulevard and South Orange Avenue in order for Azusa to become self-sufficient as a town. This donation helped make Azusa one of California's most prosperous communities during its early years."
