Azusa, California is a small city in the Central Valley of California. The population was 22,572 at the 2010 census. It is located on the San Joaquin River, about east of Fresno and west of Stockton. The first Europeans to visit Azusa were Spanish missionaries who founded missions in 1819-20. The Mission Santa Clara de Asís (1821), Mission San Gabriel Arcángel (1824), and Mission San José de la Union (1827) are still standing today. In 1848, Mexico gained independence from Spain and Azusa became part of Mexican territory. As Mexican lands grew rich in natural resources, settlers began to arrive, including Anglo Americans who arrived during the Gold Rush years (1849-64). With the end of Mexico's rule over California, Englishman Allan Nevins acquired land north of the river in 1858 and named it Nevada County after himself and his father-in-law Nicholas Biddle. He also built what is now known as North High Street in Azusa on some of this land. The early 19th century saw much growth in agriculture due to irrigation systems developed by Manuel Nieto and other entrepreneurs during that time period. Cotton plantations were established soon after; but because cotton was not highly profitable until well into the 20th century, mostAzusaindustry failed before 1850. During World War II both Axis forces bombed Azusa numerous times making it a very difficult town for civilians to live through especially during wintertime when fires burned all night long

The city is named for the ancient Azusa Pass, which connected Pasadena with Nipomo and other smaller communities in Orange County.
