It is located on the banks of the Simi Hills River and it is adjacent to Thousand Oaks and Westlake Village. The first Europeans to visit Azusa were Spanish traders in 1769. In 1821, United States Commodore John D. Sloat chartered the brig "Chesapeake" and sailed downriver from Monterey Bay for what would be America's first land route from Asia to North America. Upon landing at San Pedro de Atascadero on November 8, 1821 (the day before Santa Catalina Island became part of Mexico), Sloat named his new port for himself – San Francisco de Asís or "San Francisco of Azusa". The town was founded by Mariano Guerra in 1872 as an agricultural community known as Rancho Encinal de la Purisima Concepción del Presidio (Rancho Purisima). The name change came about because one-seventh of all acreage within the town boundaries were used for wheat farming while only one-seventh was rice farming. In 1912, when oil production began in nearby Westlake Village and Thousand Oaks, Azusa successfully lobbied their local government to become an incorporated municipality with a mayor/council system instead of a single strip mall seat per electorate limit like many other small towns across Southern California at that time. In 1969 Azusa voters passed Proposition 9 which created Measure D which authorized annexation by neighboring Thousand Oaks into cityhood; this event marked the first time that two cities had merged into one municipality in Southern California since 1922 when Los Angeles annexed downtown Beverly Hills

The Mission Santa Ana del Monterey had been founded by Father Francisco Javier Bautista de Anza near present-day Claremont on February 14, 1823 with land grants from King Juan Carlos I of Spain. The new mission became known as San Francisco Xavier after Mexican Captain Vicente Guerrero y Costilla y Pacheco who discovered it on November 6, 1776 while exploring northwest California for the Mexican crown. On July 26, 1827-, following Mexico's independence from Spain and admission into the United States of America, Mission Santa Ana del Monterey was transferred to the Mexican government under President José Joaquín Alvarado as part of a deal made between Ulysses S. Grant and Emperor Agustín Lara during his administration as governor general of California in 1875-77 A few weeks later its name was changed to Nuestra Señora de las Rosas (Our Lady of Roses) because a local favorite flower had become associated with itmediaeval pilgrimage sites throughout Northern America
