After secularization of Alta California in 1850, Pasadena became an independent municipality within Los Angeles County with its own government until 1917 when it merged into Los Angeles City proper. What started as small ranchos evolved into large agricultural operations that produced fruit trees such as grapefruit and oranges; almonds; pistachios; and other nuts before becoming one of the most diverse citrus communities in America during World War II when American forces invaded southern CA for Operation Overlord against Nazi Germany (). Most notable are outputs from Citrus Heights near downtown Azusa where 2 million pounds (10 tonnes) worth of fresh produce were grown for local consumption between 1942-1945 and 1945 alone yielded $15 million profits for growers/ processors! Azusa’s rich history began with Franciscan missionaries who arrived in 1769 following Father Junípero Serra's march from San Diego across southern Sonoma County to Monterey Bay wine country seeking converts. By 1800 there were over 100 missions operating throughout what is now Southern California including Azusa which may have been founded earlier than any other mission because evidence suggests Mission San Gabriel Arcángel had been abandoned by 1795 while missions at Otay Mesa (near present day Escondido) remained active until 1821! As part of Mexican rule over AltaCalifornia, Alcalde Francisco Perez authorized Mexican Missionaries to establish a convent here in 1827 with instructions “to serve God Almighty [and] promote agriculture” (). The first post office was established at Rancho Santa Anita on April 15th by José Maria Garza under license from Governor Manuel Micheltorena ceding control of Alcalá de Henares Districtsouthwest Of La Jolla through portions taken up by Rancho Nuestra Señora de la Concepción also located adjacent today's Eastside neighbourhood of University Park - all within modern day Azusa! Finally during postwar years many new housing developments followed including: Pico Rivera Plaza / 493 S Main St., Midtown Plaza / 5471 N Main Drive #101 & Tower Place(now called Tower Place), Northridge / 6461 W Encina Rd., Southridge / 7191 E O'Connor Rd., Rosemont Village / 8251 S McClure Ave...the list goes on.....In 1954 developers Harry Stoneberger & Jerry Weisler purchased land east of Don Juan Boulevard along Interstate 90 creating what would become known as Northridge Avenue!. finally becoming an unincorporated community within Los Angeles City proper
Azusa was founded in 1887 by member of the California State Legislature, George W. Prentice. The town's name is taken from a Native American term meaning "place where the sun sets." The first store in Azusa opened in 1888. The first post office was established in 1892. In 1905, Azusa became one of the towns in the San Gabriel Valley area of Los Angeles County.
