Azusa, California is a small town located in the San Joaquin Valley of California. It was founded by Mariano Vallejo and his family on May 24, 1847 as Rancho Azusa. The Vallejos were Mexican Americans who had come to the United States in search of a better life. They first settled in Monterey County and then moved to Azusa in 1849. The town was renamed after Lady Moody, an Englishwoman who had arrived in California during the Gold Rush and helped found Santa Clara County in 1851. The post office at Azusa was established on November 3, 1860, and named for Lady Moody. For many years it served as the center for mail delivery for much of Southern California. In 1863, when Mexico gained its independence from Spain, Calafia Hill became part of Mexico City and Postmaster General José Gomez discontinued accepting American mails there. He ordered that all mail sent to or from America be sent through Vera Cruz instead. This caused some headaches for the townspeople since they depended on supplies brought overland from Vera Cruz by wagonloads each week. In 1865–66, local farmers began cultivating grapes which led to increased demand for wine made hereabouts. By 1870 grape production amounted to over 1 million cases a year; however only about $5 worth of wine ever reached marketplaces outside of southern California due largely to transportation problems associated with shipping Bulk freight 7,500 miles across country without stopping at any intermediate points along the way! However despite these transportation difficulties proprietors Mariano Vallejo (1811-1892) & his son ManuelVallejo continued making wine even though their vines did not reach marketable levels until 1896! There are several interesting anecdotes about this period including one where MarianoVallejo set out into blustery weather with just 20 gallons of red wine left behind after traveling 1000 miles because he believed that if he could make it rain wine would sell! Another anecdote has someone asking Mariano what type of grape he used since there hadn't been much variety available since before World War II...Mariano replied "Grape? I use Shiraz!" Needless to say such stories do not reflect reality today but rather reflect how things have changed over time due mostlyto technology!
