On November 25, 1849, Anahuac Creek flooded and destroyed most parts of Rancho Santa Anita including Azusa; however little damage was done to the town center. The mission remains a popular tourist destination with its architecture and gardens still extant today. In 1886 Azusa had 9 stores and 1 grocery store while Ohlone Indians used their fishing nets to collect shellfish near what is now downtown Azusa for food that they would cook over an open fire before eating them raw or drying them for future use as flour or bread crumbs; these early settlers also collected building material such as nails and lumber from nearby farms for their own homes until railroads arrived which improved transportation options for goods coming into town from outside sources In 1922 when San Joaquin Valley ELECTRICITY came through this community went CRAZY! In 1938 Azusa became one of several American cities designated for resettlement by the Federal government following World War II ; this began what would be a long and successful history of multiculturalism in Azusa County.
