Azusa (often written as Azusa, Ozawa, or Ozawa-jima) is an unincorporated community in San Bernadino County, California. It is located on the banks of the Santa Ana River. The first European to visit what is now Azusa was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542 and he named it Navidad after his home town of Návalo in Navarre, Spain. This name may be derived from "aŭsid" meaning "to cross" or "nāvīd" meaning "Christmas". A small mission station was established by Franciscans in 1795 but it closed its doors by 1812 because of the Mexican War of Independence against Mexico. A mission school opened in 1824 and served as a center for growing agriculture and cattle ranching until it closed in 1851 because of concerns about overpopulation on the Mission lands. The first post office at Azusa opened on December 12, 1876, serving residents of adjacent Anza townships which had been organized into one large township pursuant to state law that took effect January 1, 1870. In 1907 a dam was built across the Santa Ana River at present-day Azusa to provide water for then-new Electric Railway Company lines extending southward from Pasadena through Orange County; this also led to increased residential development around the new city limits east of Interstate 5 north of First Street between Hearst Avenue and Covina Boulevard becoming known as West Azusa. By 1960 most people living east of First Street had left Azusa behind when they moved into newer parts of West Covina Boulevard including North Glendale and North Hollywood areas just east of I-5 along State Route 71 etc.. In recent years more people have moved back into older parts East Of First Street within City Limits including downtown Azusa doing so while still using azusacalifornia zip code
Azusa, California was founded in 1871 by brothers George and Jesse Azusa. They named the town after their mother's birthplace, azusa, in southern Japan. The Azusas were immigrants who had come to the United States to escape religious persecution. The town grew rapidly and soon became a center of agriculture and industry. By 1915, Azusa had a population of over 120 people. In 1938, the Azusas donated land to the city of Pasadena for use as a park. The city then built a Memorial Stadium on the donation for use by athletes from both Pasadena and nearby Corona Del Mar high schools. In 1967, the university that now attends by name Azusa Pacific University moved from its original location on State Road 109 across from State Fair Park to its present site adjacent to Memorial Stadium
