The first post office was established in 1849 with Elisha Cook as the first postmaster. The name change came about because the original owner John Cook changed it from "Swan Point" to "Azusa" since he didn't like how it sounded or felt. In 1860, azusatown was organized with Atherton as its first headquarter with one store and two families living there for a short time before moving on to other towns in that area including Lodi, Milpitas and Pleasanton . However, due to lack of resources azusatown slowly disbanded until 1912 when another group led by Reverend James Farmer formed the local branch of American Legion serving as scouts for General Pershing's Mexican Expedition against Pancho Villa which resulted in over 100% success against Villa's forces- thus endangering American lives! An interesting tidbit about azusatown is that their uniforms were made out of recycled Russian military equipment which helped keep them looking fresh during those difficult times!
