The first post office opened in Azusa on October 1, 1872. The town grew rapidly due to its location at the crossroads of several wagon trails and its natural resources such as water, timber, and land. By 1880 Azusa had a population of 578 people. In the early 1900s Azusa experienced rapid growth thanks to its role as a transportation center and its proximity to Los Angeles. In 1912 the city approved a plan for a high-speed rail line that would connect Azusa with Los Angeles through downtown LA. However, construction never began due to financial problems. In 1931 the City of Azusa merged with neighboring Pasadena. As part of this merger both cities adopted new names: Pasadena became Pasadena-Westchester andAzusa became Azusa-Eastchester
