Azusa, California is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 105,828 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Los Angeles County after Compton. Azusa is located on the Pacific Coast of Southern California and sits at an elevation of 551 feet (174 m). The first plant to be established in what would become Azusa was a citrus orchard and grove on what is now San Fernando Road near Vista Drive in 1887 by William W. Baird and others. Baird leased 3 acres (1 km2) of land from J.P. Morgan & Co., which he named "Baird Orchard". The orchards were operated by Baird's son-in-law, John Pemberton, until 1913 when Pemberton sold them to Harry Crouch who renamed them "Crouch Orchards". In 1916, Harry Crouch donated alluvial soil to the City of Los Angeles for use as new streets were laid out; this area became known as "Crouch Street".[3] The name Azusa comes from Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo's 16th century landing at Point Lobos[4] on November 11, 1542,[5] where his ship San Salvador had stopped after sailing from Mexico City with supplies for his expedition under Don Pedro Menéndez de Avilés against Spanish East Indies forces commanded by Manuel de la Hoz y Valdés.[6] In 1870s smallpox broke out among Mission Indians living around Upper Englewood so that then-Mayor Domingo Laferriere built a large brick powder magazine between Watts Boulevard and Springdale Avenue to prevent further spread which ultimately prevented any more smallpox outbreaks among Indian people living near upper Englewood until 1966 when it was finally eradicated through vaccination programs conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). After Lower Englewood Gold Rush era ended there were no more Native American residents left inAzusa so development proceeded unabated outside of Lower Englewood proper until 1920 when local developer Alfred Fazio started buying up property east of Monterey Road including much of what would become downtownAzusa This area became known as Fazio Heights as various businesses gradually moved into this older section of town center away from rapid commercial growth going on north side such as Westlake Village Development continued unabated until 1974 when Fazio died suddenly leaving his large properties unclaimed and many parts undeveloped including much present day downtownAzusa

However, due to urban renewal efforts across Southern California, many businesses closed or moved away from Azusa over the years. Today, much of what once made up downtownAzusa is now residential development around First Street and Central Avenue In spite of these challenges, both during and after its history as an agricultural community; azusahuman has always been an active participant In society throughout its existence The first permanent resident to live permanently in what would become known as Azusa was José Murillo who arrived on horseback on July 24th., 1850 from Durango Province in Mexico along with his wife María de la Asunción and their children Juana y Pedro Murillo y Dominguez and Isidora y Manuela Dominguez de Valdivia On November 8th., 1853 they erected their log cabin on a small parcel of land east ofMission Bayou opposite present day Mission Park . They built new cabins every year until 1865 when all but one had burned down due to bad weather or cholera . From 1865-1868 there were two families living at Mapleton before moving back to Durango for fifteen very happy years It appeared that this place would be their final home because no other pioneers or settlers materialized until about 1870 when Juan Sánchez came through Sonoma County looking for land that he could homestead Captain’s Island off Point Reyes lighthouse He found only Poverty Valley which he purchased for $1 cash plus 5% interest payable annually Thereafter it seemed that things would stay just simple enough here ..For almost fifty years nothing more was heard about this wonderful little corner oasis called “Azusa” until- recently !!
On November 8, 1847, the United States acquired Azusa Creek from Mexico in what is now known as the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The treaty ended the Mexican-American War. The land that now includes Azusa was part of Rancho Cucamonga and had been claimed by both Mexico and California.
