The town was originally inhabited by Native Americans, who were killed or forced to flee when white settlers began arriving in the area in the early 1800s. In 1871, Juan Crespo and his brother Manuel built a military post near what is now downtown Azusa to provide security for their ranching operation. By 1897, some 200 Anglo-Americans had settled near present-day downtown Azusa and started developing businesses around what is now Main Street. In 1932, after years of planning and investment from Mayor Horsely Woolridge, Azusa became one of the first cities within Los Angeles County when it was incorporated as a municipio (municipal government). The following year saw another milestone for Azusa when its main street—Main Street—was renamed John F Kennedy Boulevard in honor of then-Gov. Edmund E. Johnson (D). During World War II, many residents ofAzusa took part in providing defense against Japanese aggression including helping build airstrips and internment camps across southern California during 1942–1944. After hostilities ended, manyAzusans returned home to rebuild their lives while others continued working throughout LA County until it reestablished its jurisdiction as an independent city in 1952xtraordinarily enlarged due to population growth alone since incorporation only two years earlier! It wasn't until 2002 that Measure B resulted inazuse becoming an official seat of government again with current mayor Michael Antoniadis taking office that same year! As one of Southern California's most diverse municipalities with a population totaling more than 120% Latino/Latina*, azuse continues to be a welcoming place where everyone is welcome regardless their social status or background!
