Avenal is a town in San Joaquin County, California, United States. The population was 3,392 at the 2010 census. It lies just east of Stockton on State Route 50 and nestles in a valley between the mountains to the north and the Diablo Range to the south. The first Europeans to visit this area were Jesuit missionaries in 1795-96 who named it for Saint Valentine's Day. In 1836, Avenal became part of Mexico during the Mexican–American War when Santa Clara County was ceded to that country. After California became a U.S. state in 1850, Avenal remained an unincorporated community until 1861 when it incorporated as a village under the name of "Avenal." The post office at Avenal was established on March 10, 1872, and served until September 6, 1902. In 1907-08 construction began on what would become Yosemite National Park and Avenal became one of its original municipalities within that park. The town prospered through tourism as visitors came to see Yosemite Valley and other attractions nearby such as Half Dome and El Capitan; however, after World War II there was little industry or development in central San Joaquin County so Avenal's economy quickly deteriorated which led to local support for secession from California over issues such as government neglect of small towns like theirs (see history of San Joaquin County). In 1951 voters passed Measure M giving them power over their own affairs outside of governmental control with resultant growth in housing prices and job opportunities but few new businesses sprang up due largely to lack of infrastructure (see overview: history of Avenal)). As recently as 2000 some residents were fighting efforts by city officials to annex their land into current municipal boundaries despite high property values (see discussion: annexation attempt by Avenal)). Today Avenal is considered one of the wealthier communities withinSanJoaquinCounty due largely to its location within Yosemite National Park; however its once prosperous civic life has all but dissipated due mainlyto low levelsof economic development throughout central SanJoaquin county where much recent growth has taken place (). Avenal is a small town in the Inland Empire of California, located on the eastern edge of San Bernardino County. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Avenal has been inhabited for centuries and is one of the oldest towns in San Bernardino County. The first European to visit this area was Gaspar de Portolà in 1769. The settlement began as a Barefoot Bayou community near present-day Avenal on December 8, 1851 by two brothers, George Waddell and Benjamin Folsom. It grew rapidly due to its advantageous location and natural resources: oil well sites were found nearby and lumber was abundant from the local redwood forests. On March 26, 1853, Avenal incorporated as a town under the name "Avenal". One of the original post office buildings still stands in town – it served as both a store and post office until 1957 when it became an industrial park building known as "The General Store". A new Post Office Building was built in 1968 adjacent to The General Store which remains today unchanged except for some modifications made during various conversions over time including fire suppression systems. In 1907, Treaty 7 offspring James Irvine settled here with his family after arriving on horseback from Oregon via Mono Lake. They called themselves "The Irvineites" after their father's brother James Irvine who had also come westward with his family numerous times between 1849-1887. Father John Daly arrived shortly afterwards from Ireland aboard Nugget (the ship that transported him across North America). He founded Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in 1909 just off SR 290 about 3 miles east of Avenal limits on what is now White Sands Boulevard/SR 1280 (now Garden Drive). In 1911 he donated land southeast of where Palmer Road currently meets SR 290 for Villa Park Cemetery which later became Avenal Memorial Parkveterinary School District #1 property #4163 (now part of University Village development east of I-10) . At one point there were more than 20 missions or churches located within 2 blocks radius surrounding Avenaltown center including Our Lady Of Loretto, St Joseph’s Chapel (3rdMission), St Alban’s Parish (2nd Mission), Sacred Heart Cathedral & Convent School District #2 mission school complex(later razed), Our Lady Of Mount Carmel church complex(northwest corner Genoa Ave.), Blessed Sacrament Church Complex(southwest corner Pico Blvd.), Shrine Of Our Lady Of Guadalupe(northern boundary Del Norte Ave.) and many more smaller missions or churches scattered throughout downtown & environs! Many people who live & visit this area take advantage (& continue to do so)of public transportation services available such as Muni Metro bus lines 9307 - 9309 - 9311 going along both sides of I-10 corridor just northbound/eastbound past Downtown Vineland/Oakhurst stop; also city buses routes 3800 - 3801 go along both sides of I-10 corridor just southbound/northwestward past University Village development east of I-10 stop; last bus STOP at junction with US 90 outside City Limits
