The current rifle range is located off Umpqua Road northwest of town on an undeveloped piece of land that has been leased from the city of Eugene since 1951.

The first European to visit what is now Avenal was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 10, 1542. A mission station was established at present-day Avenal by Franciscan missionaries on November 3, 1769. The first winery in this area was built by Antonio Canova in 1802. The name “Avenal” was given to the settlement by Captain José Manuel Arguelles upon his arrival there on September 21, 1821 while exploring Mono County for part of his ill-fated expedition led by Mexican General Joaquín de la Hoz into California during the Alta California Gold Rush. Avenal has been inhabited since beforeolithic times and evidence suggests that humans were living here long before any Native American groups settled in this area. One theory suggests that human beings may have come down from Asia via Baja California; however no evidence exists to support this claim. It is more likely that humans crossed over from across North America through Mexico City onto what is now Southern Arizona sometime between 6000 and 4000 BC when trade routes started opening up between these areas due to increasing amounts of gold being found near Tucson and other parts of central Arizona (Kirchhoff et al., 1986). Evidence discovered at Furnas Cave nearby indicates that humans may have traveled southward along Isthmus Of Tehuantepec about 12000 years ago (Gonzalez-Baca et al., 2002). This migration would have taken place during an ice age epoch when much ofnorthwesternMexicoand northwesternArizonawerecoveredby glaciers/thunderrdoes (Lopez-Tierra & Linares, 2006). No direct evidence remains today proving or disproving this theory but it provides interesting context for understanding how Humans interact with their environment over time and how various cultures interacted with each other within their geographical region(Kirchhoff et al., 1986). Avenal is a small town in Calaveras County, California, located about east of the city of San Francisco. Avenal was founded by George Callahan in 1875 and incorporated as a town on February 9, 1876. The population was 21 when it incorporation occurred and increased to 54 at the time of the 2010 census. The history of Avenal begins with George Callahan, who arrived in California in 1851 from Ireland. He began ranching south of what is now Avenal and soon found success raising cattle and cultivating potatoes. In 1875, he decided to move his operation northward into what is now Calaveras County after finding good land there for grazing and farming. callahan built a log cabin near present-day Avenal on Gough Hill Road which became known as his home until his death in 1943. His wife Agnes (née Keane) later erected a large wooden frame house on the same spot which still stands today. Callahan's original cabin served as both his home and office for many years before being replaced by the current structure around 1915-16. The community rapidly developed due to its location, ideal grazing land, access to irrigation water from nearby lakes, transportation options including Stagecoach trains that ran through town during the day or night, and easy access to local markets selling all manner of food products such as meat, eggs, milk, flour, butter etc. Over time other businesses were added to the mix such as an grocery store opened by Mrs. Keane in 1954 which continued until it closed down in 1978; a post office operated from 1907-1974; two churches (First Methodist Church 1941-1945 & Stake Christian Lutheran Church 1945-1957); a church hall/conference center constructed in 1966; an agricultural cooperative opened in 1974; various minor roads were improved including Gough Hill Road some distance northeast of present day Avenal village limits; and finally School District No 15 reopened its doors within municipal boundaries after more than 50 years since it closed statewide following a fire that destroyed much of San Francisco’s schools back in 1949). In recent times there has been significant redevelopment taking place with the construction of new homes popping up along Gough Hill Rd., remodeling/renovation projects inside existing structures (particularly around school administrative offices), major infrastructure projects like new water lines - many coming due largely thanks to Measure B funding -and even hosting occasional events like car show nights or music festivals throughout summer months!
