Avenal, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. Avenal is composed of two villages: north Avenal and south Avenal. North Avenal is home to the smaller village of North Avenal and South Avenal the larger village of Southaven. The community was founded by Johnathan Swift in 1853 as a log cabin on the edge of present-day Northaven. It became an agricultural center with large ranches and farms that produced hay, corn, wheat, oats, beans and other crops. The community name derives from Saint Valentine's Day (February 14th), when it was first incorporated as a town by George Haney in 1875. In 1916 Theodore Roosevelt visited the community while he was speaker of the United States Congress and declared it "the most beautiful place I have ever seen." He called it "a little slice out of Nature's great American map." On July 15th 1966 local residents voted to adopt the Kern County green flag which now flies over both villages. Avenal has several schools including North Haven Elementary School; East High School; West High School; and Stonington Christian School which provides instruction for Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade students as well as high school students who attend Stonington Valley Union High School or nearby Donner Valley Union High School.. There are also three churches in the community - First Baptist Church which services mostly children between ages 3-8 years old; Our Lady Of Guadalupe Catholic Church serving adults age 9-14 years old; and Ascension Episcopal Chapel which serves adults age 15+. In addition to these various religions there are also several businesses within the community - such as Walmart Supercenter, Pizza Hut, Dairy Queen - all within minutes' walk of each other. Additionally there are several parks within close proximity to offer activities such as baseball games or playgrounds for children to play while parents can relax inside their homes enjoying views from their patio windows or balconies . Finally some residents may enjoy playing golf at one of many golf courses scattered throughout Northern Kern County or taking a drive down into Death Valley National Park for its stunning scenery

Avenal, California is a small community located on the eastern edge of San Bernardino County in the Central Valley. The town was founded in 1887 by Nicholas Avenal and his wife Catharine, who named it after their home village of Avellino, Italy. It became an incorporated city in 1923. The Avenals were among the first Californians to arrive following the Mexican-American War and soon opened a store in what is now downtown Avenal. They also began to build a modest but sturdy house on present day Fourth Street. The family continued to reside there untilCatharine's death in 1951. Nicholas then moved the house into its current location and resided there until his death in 1962. Nicholas' widow, Anna Maria Avenal (1863-1949), continued to live at the house until her death in 1949. After her husband's death, she took over management of the property and made it available for public use as a museumowned by San Bernardino County Museum District since 1957. In 1978, she donated all of her resources (assets including land) to the City of Avenal for development into a planned community with retail shops, parks and cultural attractions called "Avenal Place." Today, Avenal is an interesting center for local history with its own museum (the Nicholas Aventail House Museum), historical society (the Anthony Park Historical Society), local newspaper (Avenal Daily News), several restaurants and cafes along Fourth Street near Main Avenue/, and new construction that includes a library/museum complex ().
Avenal was founded in 1871 by George W. Avenal and his wife, Julia P. Avenal. The town was named for General John C. Fremont, who had played a significant role in the California Gold Rush of 1849-50. George W. Avenal served as its first mayor and ran the town's affairs while he mined gold in nearby Butte County. He also ran a sawmill and millinery business in town before his death in 1908. Julia P. Avenal continued to run the businesses until her death in 1943.
