On October 1, 1868, a group of men led by John Sutter discovered gold in the nearby area of Promontory Point. Stephens opened the first grocery store in Avenal and it remains one of town's most important businesses today.
Avenal is a city located in Kern County, California. The population was 7,813 at the 2010 census. Avenal is part of the Bakersfield–Chico–Redding Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Kern County were Spanish traders and missionaries in the mid-16th century. In 1846, Mexican Californian José Joaquin Cisneros discovered an area of rolling hills and valleys that would later become Avenal. The town was founded by Captains George Purdy and James Waddell on November 5, 1847 as a base for their explorations of Rancho San Francisco de las Flores near present-day Bakersfield. Upon its establishment, Avenal served as a trading post between ranch hands in Kern County and those in Coahuila and Mexico City. In 1849, Captain Purdy sold his interest in the town to David Price who named it Price's Addition after himself and two others who had contributed $5 each towards its construction. Price continued to hold title to the land until 1862 when he transferred it to his son Hiram Hance Price (1814-1892). Hance Price donated additional land to make up what is now Park Avenue which ran from 1st Street eastward through downtown Avenal before turning south along Park Road past Brushy Hill into what is today’s Goldwater Boulevard. This donation also included much of today’s north side of town including most of Brushy Hill Road which runs parallel with I-5 just south of exit 118B off Highway 101 near Interstate 880/Uwi Freeway (now State Route 163). Avenal’s growth paralleled that of nearby Bakersfield during this time period with both towns becoming centerpieces for trade with Central Valley farmers and buyers from around California as well as goods exported across international boundaries such as goods produced by gold rush miners at Sutterville in Northern California or cotton grown by African Americans working on cattle ranches outside Fresno during this time period. During World War II, many workers from nearby Bakersfield enlisted in the military while residents erected Victory Stations throughout town Service stations were also established at various locations within the city limits providing fuel, food and other supplies needed by soldiers durin gthe conflict including one located on Race Street housing an American Legion Post which functioned continuously until 1945 when it was closed due to structural problems caused by war effort consumption plus fire damage over time. One notable event associated with Venal during these years was when on October 15, 1943 Mayor Harry Fenton attended a meeting held at Mojave Air National Guard Base adjacent to town concerning plans for future Allied air operations over Southern California following Japan's attack upon Pearl Harbor that year resulting in World War II hostilities between America & Japan known as The Pacific War . At this meeting Fenton presented plans for creating an air base within company control turf adjacent unto Town Hall where military personnel could be stationed for combat operations if necessary should Army forces be called forth elsewhere within California or beyond than under normal circumstances previously allowed under United States Army regulations governing wartime planning & deployment
