Avenal is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 9,831 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield Metropolitan Area. Avenal was founded in 1853 by Mormons who came from Illinois and built a mission there. The town began to grow rapidly after railroads arrived in the 1860s and 1870s, and by the early 20th century it had over 10,000 residents. In 1922, Avenal became an incorporated town with a mayor-council form of government. However, Avenal's growth slowed during the Great Depression; its population only increased by 1% between 1928 and 1932. During World War II, Avenal served as a military airbase for bomber pilots based in nearby Kern County. The surrounding community also played an important role in post-WWII social services for veterans and their families. In recent years, Avenal has seen an increase in development; numerous businesses have moved into the town from other parts of Kern County or outside of California altogether. The town lies on the banks of the Mokelumne River. Avenal was named for John Avenal, an early settler and surveyor who surveyed and laid out the townsite in 1853. Avenal was founded by John Avent (1814–84), an Englishman who arrived in America in 1849 and soon became one of its leading citizens. He built a house on what is now Main Street in 1853; it still stands today as a historic landmark. Other early settlers included James Wares (1851–1924) and his brother Charles Wares (1857–1945). In 1862, William Hogue(1826–92) came to live hereabouts and help develop Avenal's agricultural economy. Avenal saw some significant growth during World War II when many American servicemen stationed here returned home after military service abroad. They brought with them their families and businesses which helpedto create new industries such as aircraft manufacturing or shipbuilding that continue to thrive even today. Avenal was founded by two brothers in 1856. The first Avenal post office opened in 1857. The town was named after General Antonio Maria Ventura, who died in 1855 at the age of 27 years old while fighting in Mexico City against the Mexican army. In 1880, Avenal had a population of 100 people and a school with 10 students. In 1902, the first telephone system was installed in the town. The largest employer in Avenal during the 1920s-1930s was World War II HMS "Hecla" hangaryard workers who built landing stages for Navy ships at various locations around town. Other large employers during this time include Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), Kaiser Aluminum Technical Laboratory (KATL), and Consolidated Coal Company (CC). Avenal experienced significant growth beginning in the 1940s when it became an important military base for California's war effort during World War II. During that time, local businesses generated jobs such as aircraft repair and manufacturing; grocery stores; steel mills; leather factories; and other factories. After hostilities ended, many residents left to return home or pursue other opportunities throughout California during what is known as "the post-war boom." However, Avenal continued to grow steadily through the 1960s until reaching its current size of about 3500 residents today.
