Avenal is a small city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 5,653 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield–Rancho Cucamonga metropolitan area. Avenal is named after George Washington Avenal, one of the original settlers in Kern County and its namesake for his land grant in 1847. Avenal was first settled by pioneers from New England who arrived during the Gold Rush in 1849. The city was platted on April 4, 1850, by John Sutter and James Mapes. The town's name may be derived from George Washington Avenal's grant of 2 square miles (0.8 km²) to James Wolkert on November 20th of that year. The first post office was established at Avenal on January 3rd, 1851; it changed its name to Bakersfield on February 14th of that year due to gold fever then plaguing California as a result of President Millard Fillmore's Executive Order No. 998 limiting access to gold resources within the state. In 1865, when nearby Ranchero became an independent municipality with its own government under Governor Edmund Gorman Browning following passage of the State Constitution creating county government within the newly created Kern County, Bakersfield became part of Ranchero while Avenal remained separate and unincorporated until 1912 when it annexed into Ranchero as well becoming one community with all local services provided through a single municipal governing body called "the Municipal Court". In 1916 Aileen Jenssen married David Kappeler and they moved to La Habra where he ran a grocery store before moving them back to Bakersfield in 1951 where they opened what would eventually become Kappeler & Jaques Chevrolet dealership and later still Kappeler Auto Sales Incorporated which became Empire Chevrolet Parts Co., Incorporated until 1992 when their son Marcia bought out their father’s interest and re-opened Empire Chevroletpartsco., incorporating as Aiello Automotive Group plc.. In 2003 Aiello AutomotiveGroup plc./Empire Chevroletpartsco., incorporated merged with Acura Motorsports LLC which had been formed by merger among several other companies operating dealerships (including GMC/Chrysler/Plymouth/Jeep.) At this time there were more than 1,000 Acura dealers worldwide including 8 locations in Southern California including Cañon City just north of downtown Bakersfield The company started production at their new factory located off I-5 near Victorville during 2006 engine refresh project
Avenal was a small community in the Coachella Valley, California. It was located on the east side of Interstate 10 and included Avenal Road, Avenal Park, and the village of Avenal West. The last post office closed in 1984.
