When Zeno was only 15 years old he immigrated with his parents to America and settled in what is now Avenal, California in 1846. He started asmall farm at that location with twenty residents and soon found success farming cotton and other crops. In 1850 he married Maria Luisa de Carvalho y Pacheco (1820-1912), who also came to America from Portugal via Ellis Island in 1840. They had three children: Zeno Jr., Anna Sofia (born 1861), and Lorenzo Severino (1863-1951). They were among the many immigrants who arrived in California during this period: their arrival signified a change in fortunes for both Zeno Avenal and his community; before they arrived there were few if any Italians living within easy reach of downtown San Francisco or Sacramento City limits; but after their arrival things changed dramatically for both men - not just because of their economic successes but also due to increasing social tensions between native Californians and new arrivals from Europe/Portugal/Italy etc.). There are several factors contributing to this dramatic transformation: firstly, although most Italians working within municipal boundaries) tended towards subsistence agriculture rather than urbanization ([e]xcept for a handful of professionals]), their descendants have constituted one of Californias largest fabrications ever - Estimates place Italians alone amongst Californios earliest inhabitants at 25% statewide prevalence; secondly there existed throughout much of this period cultural interpenetration between newcomers - even though Italian heritage often remained primarily oral or lyric; finally Mexicans had been arriving en masse southward through wagon trains since 1849 - initially mainly drawn by opportunities available along Nisqually River corridor connecting Puget Sound region northward withMexican borderlands eastward’ ([p]erhaps owing more to drought events then anything else]). The influxes of these various groups led eventuallyto mixed race children being raised throughout Californian neighborhoods where parental discrimination against such “mixed blood” children was rampant – leading ultimatelyto significant educational improvements for Anglo children across Angelenos general schools system as well as groomed individuals coming from wealthier backgrounds into high level government service etc.)
