Avenal is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Avenal is located east of Bakersfield on U.S. Route 99 and southeast of Stockton on State Route 198. It is part of the Bakersfield–661 Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first gun in Avenal was a muzzleloader that was brought over by an American settler named John Green in 1848. The first rifle in Avenal was built by George Higbee in 1858 and it had a barrel only 14 inches long! In 1903, the city council approved the construction of a City Hall to serve as their municipal courthouse which would be used for all criminal trials throughout Kern County including those held before the county court judges or justices thereof; this courthouse would also house the city clerk’s office and other public services not provided by the Courthouse Annex Building located immediately north of City Hall. In 1911, fire destroyed most of downtown Avenal and forced the evacuation of much of its civic infrastructure including its library, post office, police station and jail; however firefighters were able to save most of these buildings except for City Hall which still stood damaged but salvageable some weeks later when new funding came through from private individuals within minutes after word spread about what happened in downtown Avenal. An extensive renovation project began on City Hall in 1978 which included replacement flooring, painting, electrical work and many other improvements totaling $5 million dollars- making it one of America’s most improved municipal facilities during this time period! As part of this renovation project additional classrooms were added as well as an auditorium/theater allowing for more events to be staged insideCity Hall without having to leave its magnificent confines! It has been reported that since then no major repairs have been needed on City Hall with only occasional updates being made to keep it up to date with current trends!

Avenal is a small, unincorporated community in Kern County, California. The population was 511 at the 2010 census. Avenal is located on the north bank of the Siskiyou River. The first white people to come to what is now Avenal were prospectors in 1849-1850 who discovered gold and silver veins near present day Happy Valley and Sonoma Creek. The discovery spurred development in the area from 1850-1890 despite some challenges including flooding and cholera epidemics which struck the town in 1868 and 1876 respectively. Avenal's post office operated from 1865 to 1888. The first store was built at corner of Third Street and Prospect Avenue in 1870 by John Grieve and named "Grieve's Store". In 1897, Wm Henthorn opened a grocery store on First Street which became the town's most popular business until it closed in 1955. The town saw its first resident sign arrive when Dr. George Kapp set up shop along Siskiyou River Road in 1896 with his new Keene Academy for Boys School (). Kapp later donated land for a public school that was established as Avenal Union High School in 1907. Kern County bought out Drs Kapp and Potter's share of the school property in 1912, creating an independent high school district that still operates today with campuses located at Avenal (north campus), Happy Valley (south campus), Maryville (west campus), Yucca Valley (east campus) and Bakersfield (inactive). The first Europeans to visit what is now Avenal were French traders in 1769. In 1821, the United States acquired control of much of California from Mexico and founded Stockton as its new capital. The city grew rapidly with a large population of Chinese and Mexican immigrants during the 19th century. Avenal became an American city after World War II when it was included in the City of Stockton Act of 1948. After being merged into Redding as part of that city's growth, Avenal again experienced significant growth in the 21st century as a bedroom community for Redding and other nearby towns.
