Avenal is a small town in the Central Valley of California, located about 120 miles (190 km) north of Sacramento and 110 miles (175 km) east of San Francisco. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Avenal was founded by Spanish traders in 1847 as part of Rancho Viejo del Oro. It became part of the United States in 1850. The first European settlement in what is now California was made by Spaniards on an island near present-day Yuba City in 1821. After years of exploration and trade, Mexican Captain José Joaquin de Arguelles discovered land that would later become California in 1836 while searching for a Northwest Passage to India. He named it Alta California after himself and his guide, Fray Sepúlveda. In 1847, two American investors, James Wetherbee and George Hearn purchased Rancho Viejo del Oro from Arguelles for $20,000 (). The group named their new rancho Avenal after Peter Quincey's old fathers home village of Averill Necklace on Long Island Sound. In 1850, when Californias admission into the Union as a nation came into effect, Avenal became part of the newly formed Contra Costa County . The community experienced rapid growth following its incorporation as a city under statehood in May 1932; during this time it had a population exceeding 5,000 people living within walking distance of each other or using public transportation. However, by 1938 Avenal had shrunk to its current size due to overcrowding and lack of infrastructure such as water or sewer systems; even today much Of Avenals downtown area remains undeveloped although plans are being made to revive some businesses along with creating new housing developments throughout town center which will provide more than 2 million square feet (100 hectares)of retail space over a period spanning 20 years or more In recent years there has been an effort underway initiated by local interests led by Mayor John Saretsky called "Avenal 2030" which focuses on redeveloping portions including riverfront property westward from I-580/I-280 to create an open waterfront park oriented towards global maritime events taking place downriver adjacent to Republic Airport.......................................................................

In addition, there are numerous smaller businesses that contribute significant resources to local coffers such as ranchers and farmers who sell food products from their land or services such as lawn care or window cleaning; these companies also often maintain relationships with Avenal's community organizations which include churches, schools, civic clubs and other non-profit groups instrumental in keeping Avenal alive and vibrant despite occasional downturns in its economy
