As various industries have arisen in nearby cities such as Fresno or Stockton over the years, Avenal has become increasingly dependent on these larger cities for economic development opportunities; however, there are occasional efforts made by local officials to develop its own economy which has resulted in some success stories such as truck stop/grocery store operator Gregorio’s Fish Market being lured out from its longtime location next to Park Boulevard after experiencing difficulty attracting customers away from nearby Fresno City Hall due to this effort by local officials

Avenal is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. Avenal was founded in 1879 by J.D. Payne and W.M. Starrett as a rancho on the edge of what is now Coalinga Valley. Payne established himself as a rancher with 10 acres (4 hectares) of land near present-day Avenal City and began trading goods with local Native Americans for hides and other materials they used for clothing and shelter.[4] In 1886, he married Bernadette Chapin,[5] who by then had arrived from Bakersfield and startedidespread cattle ranching operations in Kern County[6][7]: early avenals were pastured on ranches that ranged up to 100 miles (160 km) long[8][9]: quality beefalo ( today's bighorn sheep ) were one of the few things intertribally traded between communities large enough to support commerce[10]: driveways or roads leading into many of these ranches Today some remnant cattle grazing property remains adjacent to modern day Avenal city limits
Avenal is located in the state of California, about 15 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. Avenal was founded in 1853 by José Antonio García and his wife Marcela Rubio as a small Mexican farmstead. The town grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s, becoming one of the wealthiest communities in the area.
