Avenal, California is a small town in the County of San Bernardino. It was founded in 1874 by John Wesley Powell and his wife Lucy as a ranch on the slopes of Mount Whitney. The town became an agricultural center during the gold rush, and its name comes from the Spanish word "avena" meaning "sweet corn". When the United States military occupied California during World War II, Avenal's population grew to over 10,000. The men who worked at General Motors plant in nearby Monrovia were among those drafted into service in early 1942. Many of these men never saw action because they were released after the war ended. Thanks to Johnnie Johnson and his team at J&J Gun Works, Avenal has been able to keep its firearms industry since World War II. Johnson has been responsible for developing many innovations in firearms production including blowback systems, hammersights and other accessories. As part as partook in this treaty settlement were three other townships: Shasta Township (now Grasmere), Trinity Township (now Sunnyvale) and Colusa Township (now Colusa). The grant covered an area that extended from hills near Folsom Lake southward to Red Bluff Creek and thence westward along Red Bluff Creek to point where it turned southwesterly into Santa Clara River valley; thus Minden became one side effect or result of what would eventually become known as San Francisco Bay Area expansion - though Minden never annexed any portion beyond its original borders.] In 1865, during Reconstruction efforts following the American Civil War, control over most rancho grants within Californias newly acquired eastern sector passed from Mexico back to American hands via Treaty Of Guadalupe Hidalgo - though some smaller grants continued under Mexican jurisdiction until after World War II when they reverted back to US ownership.] Homespun cotton mill built 1840s & 1850s A few acres around Mill site remains today used for crops] Today's Avenal started out as one small rural community named George Balfour Settlement circa1881
