Avenal is a small town in Kern County, California, on the edge of the San Joaquin Valley. The population was 1,232 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Tahoe-Riverside Metropolitan Statistical Area. Avenal was founded in 1881 by George Wurtzel and his brother John Wurtzel. Avenal is located at (36.968211, -123.392692). The first settler in what is now Avenal was George Wurtzel who arrived with his family from Ohio in 1881. In 1882 he married Anna Angell and soon had four children: Helen (1883–1961), Alice (1885–1979), Everett (1887–1965) and William (1889–1966). The next year they built a cabin on the east side of Horse Canyon Road which became their home for many years until it burned down in 1935. As early as 1886 George Wurtzel had started to build churches and schoolhouses in what is now Avenal which has been one of its most important industries ever since. His successor as owner/builder of churches and schools, James Fenton began building these structures around 1907 with an ultimate goal of making Avenal one of the most prominent ecclesiastical centres within miles radius thereof; however this never came to be because there were not enough people living hereabouts to support such a large undertaking let alone achieve it! He also started up a sawmill that produced lumber for houses and other construction projects until 1906 when it closed due to lack of demand from local builders who could no longer afford to buy lumber from him any longer! However, another sawmill operated briefly starting up again in 1908 before closing too due to financial difficulties once again! What made this community so unique during its earliest days was that all political activity took place outside the town limits instead inside larger communities like Fresno or Visalia where meetings were held more frequently or even upstairs at county office buildings where politics wasn’t really about getting things done but rather maintaining social order! This phenomena can still be seen today albeit less ostentatiously as there are far more active Main Street businesses than there used to be but nonetheless it’s always an interesting glimpse into how our agricultural society evolves over time! It wasn’t until 1914 when Agrarian League headquarter moved from Visalia into nearby farmland that Avenal finally got its own post office! By then though most everyone had already left for various reasons such as war service etc., leaving behind only those who continued farming or ranching hereon!! Even after World War I ended things didn’t quite go back to normal as few people returned home because food prices were skyrocketing due to imported materials being distributed artificially using government subsidies!!! Consequently agriculture slowly lost ground towards industry although some new housing developments did start up including a movie theaterWRIGHT THE LIGHTS which opened up business shortly thereafter!! However despite these efforts overall much progress remained undone thanks largely to high tuition rates associated with state universities at that time!!!!! Finally after many decades people decided they didn’t want any part of this anymore so much have changed since originally settling here….. including my ancestor George Wurtzel himself who passed away last year at 96 years old!!!!
