John Fenton organized a wagon train to explore this region which included oxen, horses, mules, as well as men on foot or horseback carrying supplies for the new community he had founded called Harrisonville on the banks of the San Joaquin River near modern day Tulare County capital Sacramento. In 1888 John married Catharine Nevin from Kentucky while still living at Harrisonville; they moved to Avenal where they deposited their belongings before beginning to build a log cabin known as "Harrison House". Catharine played an important role in helping to establish early Avenal as a thriving community; she helped to teach her husbands' children how to read and write so that they could join the emerging American society. For many years she presided over daily life at Henderson House until her death in 1951 at the ripe old age of 98 years 4 months following a long illness which severely tested her physical stamina but left her mentally alert throughout most of it all including serving as an active member both local school board meetings during those years through 1978 when she retired from teaching full time due to advancing arthritis into an advanced stage that rendered traditional classroom instruction impossible for her but kept up strong mental energy through emailing responses during class discussions even though feeling quite frail & helpless despite being bedridden most days during THAT timeframe

Avenal is still an important stop on Highway 9 south of Stanislaus City limits today although it has declined significantly in population over the years due largely to commuting difficulties caused by its location miles from any major cities or employment opportunities outside of agriculture or service-industry jobs typical of small towns at that time
