Avenal, California is the oldest city in Kern County and the seat of Mountain View. It was founded by John C. Frémont on November 7, 1853 as a rancho named after Mount Whitney. The first store in Avenal opened on December 1, 1854. In 1865, it became the capital of California. The first ammunition company in Avenal was established in 1892 when Leland Stanford bought out a group of investors for $1 million. The company produced Winchester rifles and Shotguns until 1903 when it merged with Remington Arms Company to form American Arms Corporation. American Arms continued to produce shotguns and rifles until 1907 when it merged with Browning & Co., Inc., but production stopped completely in 1911 due to World War I munitions limitations. In 1916, the United States government purchased all assets of American Arms Corporation for $30 million. This led to the start of what is now known as Ammunition Development Associates (ADA) which manufactures ammunition under license from other manufacturers primarily reloaders and shotgunners throughout North America including Europe and Asia Pacific (AP). Avenal is located in the Central California mountains, about sixty miles north of Sacramento. The first ammunition depot was built here in 1866 by Captain John S. Goodwin and licensed to export artillery rounds from New York City. Ammunition production began at a local mill in 1875 and continued until 1907. In 1914, the company became part of Winchester Repeating Arms Company, which merged with Remington Arms Company in 1920. The Avenal Ammunition plant closed in 1984 and was demolished the next year.

In 1874, Avenal's first post office was opened and it remained open until 1912. The first school was built in 1911 and served grades K-12 until 1978 when it became a junior high school - still serving students today. The town has seen many changes over time: It lost its railroad stop (the last being removed in 1984) for an airport; it saw heavy development during World War II as Ft Benning Army Base campgrounds were developed nearby; and then came a period of decline starting around 1980 which saw much job loss and displacement among locals. It became a railroad junction in 1881 and grew rapidly due to its location at the intersection of several important trails. In 1909, Avenal lost its status as a town when it merged with nearby Keswick to form Marysville-Avenal-Keswick. Today, Avenal is a small community located just south of Marysville in Grant County. The area that now makes up Avenal was first inhabited by Native Americans who hunted and gathered wild plants and animals for food. They were eventually replaced by Europeans who came through the region in search of trade goods and land for settlement. The first European settler in what is now Avenal was George C Smith who arrived on January 14th, 1853 from Boston, Massachusetts along with his family. He built the first house in what is now Avenal and named it New Haven which stood until 1865 when he sold it to John Haidgeroad for $300 dollars plus interest. In 1881, the then small town of Keswick combined with nearby Anchor Bay to form Marysville-Avenal-Keswick which later gained status as a city after merging with other smaller towns in Grant County such as North Bend and Collinsville in 1907 In 1909, whilestill part of Marysville-Avenal-Keswick, Avenal lost its status as a town when it merged with neighboring Keswick to form larger entity known as Grant County .Today’s population of around 7500 people resides withinGrantCounty only . As one of ruralGrant County’s fastest growing communities during the 20th century , Avenal experienced significant development both inside and outside its boundaries over time including annexation into Stanislaus City (1929), addition to Redding (1940), establishment ofMarysvileroville Municipal Water District (1945), creationofthe present day Grantsboro Village (1950) and finally incorporation into Marysville proper (1959). Many primarily agricultural activities – such as fruit orchards or cotton plantations – continued until well into the 21st century despite competition from more recent housing developments within Marysville itself .
