Avenal, California is home to the oldest continuously inhabited community in Californias Winters League. The town was founded in 1853 by Captain George Armstrong and his wife Lavinia, who named it after their home in Scotland. The first commercial ammunition store was established in Avenal on July 3, 1892. It was run by Isaiah Norton and his brother-in-law, Hiram Newton. From its inception, ammunition sales were a major source of revenue for the town. Ammunition production began at the nearby Alhambra Mine in 1895 and continued until 1903 when it shifted to the Morenci Mine. In 1916, Mayor Fenton Hennessey ordered the closure of the Morenci Mine due to an increase in lead levels in water supplies from mining operations nearby. This led to a period of rapid population growth within Avenal; during this time, businesses such as banks and grocery stores mushroomed as people turned to ammo for their firearms needs. In 1925, Mayor Hennessey declared that ammunition sales would completely cease within Avenal because of concerns about lead contamination from mining operations – this decision remains one of the most controversial in town history. In 1954, Ammo Corporation merged with other munitions companies to form what is now known as Raytheon Company (formerly Arsenal National Ammunition). The merger resulted in significant job losses for many local residents – however, ammo sales continued uninterrupted until 1991 when they were halted due to federal regulations regarding mines storingWolframite asbestos products (a valuable resource used primarily for insulation). Today, Avenal's economy revolves around its agricultural sector; although there are no active ammunition mills left operating within the town limits today there are numerous small businesses that import ammo products from out of state or sell reloading supplies online. Avenal, California is a small town located in Northern California. The population was 3,913 as of the 2010 census. Avenal's economy is based on agriculture and ranching. The area around Avenal has been inhabited by the Pomo people for over 10,000 years. In 1848, General Mariano Arguelles arrived in what is now Avenal to build a military post. He named the post after his friend and colleague Antonio José de Arguelles y Costilla. The first stores opened in Avenal in 1876. A post office was established at Avenal in 1888, and remained in operation until 1918. The first train to arrive at Avenall station was on May 2, 1892. Avenal had its own school district from 1915-1959; however, that district merged into the San Bernardino County Unified School District upon its creation in 1959. In 1961-1963, local citizens voted to establish a city government within their town limits; this movement led to the incorporation of Avenal as a city on November 5 of that year. On December 12 of that year, voters passed an ordinance establishing fire services for the City of Avenal and giving city residents exclusive authority with respect thereto with respect to all matters relating thereto (see "city charter"). On October 1st of 2003, Mayor John Cascione announced plans for the annexation of Dripping Springs by the City of Aurora; this annexation would have increasedlivestock production by 300 acres within the City Limits of both cities combined! However due to popular vote - overruled by Mayor Cascione - no such annexation took place; instead Dripping Springs became part of Aurora!

It was founded by George Price Avenal in 1876 as a small hamlet on the banks of the San Joaquin River. Pershing, who had fought in World War I and later served as commander-in-chief of American forces in Mexico City. The community experienced significant growth during World War II as defense contractors and military personnel relocated to nearby towns and cities throughout Northern California. During the 1960s and 1970s, Avenal experienced rapid population growth due to the opening of new shopping malls, Interstate 80 bypassing the town, and new oil refinery projects. However, recent population growth has been limited by a lack of available housing development within walking distance of major retail areas. Nonetheless, Avenal remains an important cultural center for southern California; its annual Grassroots Music Festival is one of the largest music festivals in North America.
