Auburn, California is a small town located in the San Joaquin Valley of Southern California. The population was 12,828 at the 2010 census, down from 15,571 in 2000. It is part of the Fresno-Madera, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first inhabitants of Auburn were Native Americans who traded with groups to the south. In 1769, Spanish settlers arrived and built Mission San Gabriel del Obispo on an estate that now includes much of Auburn. After Mission San Gabriel was destroyed by a fire in 1813, many Mexican and Anglo Californios settled in Auburn and other areas around Fresno County because of its fertile soil and cheap labor opportunities during the gold Rush era. During World War II, General Douglas MacArthur's Ninth Army camped at Auburn for two months while they moved through Bakersfield and Tulare Counties towards Los Angeles. AUBURN HISTORY: On November 5th 1860 (date unknown), Hiram Sibley donated land comprising present day corner lot 3rd & 4th Streets east of downtown to Abraham Lincoln for $1 per acre (2 km²). This donation set off what would become one of America’s earliest Flagpoles as Union forces displaying “Auburn” flown from various locations throughout California took up permanent residence on this spot on December 11th 1861 #811 to commemorate this event marking our country’s entry into war against Mexico #633 In 1873 Albion Lawrence opened his first store in what is now downtown Auburn when it was still named Park Avenue. Headed by his son John Lawrence until his death in 1915, Albion had been running a general store since he left England with his family when he became a naturalized U.S Citizen in 1851 at the age of 26 years old! JL&J ran this establishment until 1898 when they combined forces with their father to open their own store which became known as The Grosse Pointe Store; later changed to The Lawrences Store after John Lawrence’s death In 1924 A&P Stores Inc., successor company to the Old National Bank branch that closed twelve years earlier along Park Ave., opened its doors next door onto 4th Street after failed efforts by local merchants Ace Hardware Co., Barney’s Clothing Store & McLaughlin’s Drugstore all within blocks west across busy Main Street . . . This location served as A&P Stores Headquarters from 1924 until 1984 when it moved across Stockton Blvd., near today's McDonald's restaurant! The old Northwestern Pacific Railroad Depot which sat on Lot 10B north side of Main Street between 1st & 2nd Avenues was razed in 1970 following track relocation adjacent to I-5 South for new development including housing developments over time Following closure A&P stores closed either due to lack of customers or economic conditions caused by rising gas prices then highway construction projects nearby starting circa 1965 continuing thru 1975 caused termination/closure decisions not typically reversed even tho some sporadic visits over time Alfred Eisenstadt eventually acquired title deeds && reopened original A&P store building (& adjoining parking lot) northeast corner 3rd St N via main street circa 1985 currently under restoration/repairs being completed
Auburn, California was founded in 1851 by George A. Smith and named for the Auburn Plains, which were then located in central California. The town began as a small agricultural community with few residents and only a single store. In 1872, the first post office was established in Auburn, and within a few years the population had grown to over 100 people. garment factory arrived 1880s in Auburn In 1898, the first university was established at Auburn, and within a few years it had become one of the most popular schools in California. By 1945, however, Auburn had declined from its heyday as an educational center to becoming an economic powerhouse due to its focus on manufacturing. The current incarnation of Auburn is portions of two towns: Dominguez Hills and Garden City.
