AUBURN, Calif. (KQED) — For more than 50 years, shooters in Auburn have used ear plugs to protect their hearing. The plugs are made of metal and rubber and go into the ears to reduce noise exposure from gunfire. They were first developed in the 1940s as a way for troops in World War II to sleep through loud gunfire without losing their hearing. Some people still use ear plugs today, but they’re less common because they can be uncomfortable and cumbersome to wear. The Earplug Foundation was founded in Auburn in 1966 by an group of veterans who wanted to make sure that everyone who uses ear plugs has a chance to enjoy their shooting experience without fear of injury or loss of hearing. Auburn, California is a city in Alameda County, California, United States. The population was 34,824 at the 2010 census. It is located on the East Bay of San Francisco and shares borders with Berkeley to the east and Hayward to the north. According to the United States Census Bureau, Auburn has a total area of 26.5 square miles (79 km²), all land. The first written mention of Auburn was in 1795 when it was part of Spanish territory called Rancho San Pablo de las Pulgas (now part of Oakland). In 1836, John Cranch discovered gold near present-day Auburn and named it after his father's home state of Tennessee. After some debate between local officials over whether to name an event after a president or vice president and another discovery in 1849 led by prospector George Stephenson at what is now Albany Hill -stimulated by reports from Stephensons' partner James Irvine -Auburn was incorporated as a city on April 24, 1851. In 1860, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert E. The original building design for City Hall included five stories with rooflines that extended beyond walls onto driveways leading up to buildings opening onto large lawn areas inside which speakers could be heard without interruption from those attending hearings or debates being held within hearing rooms upstairs; these lawn areas also housed fire pits used for cooking purposes during public meetings. Auburn, California was born in 1873 on an agricultural ranch near the present-day town of Auburn. The area now includes the city of Auburn and portions of Martinez and Kern counties. When America's gold rush ended in 1848, many prospectors left for other parts of the country, but a few people managed to find new mineral rights around what is now Auburn. One such man was James Laughlin, who built a sawmill and gristmill on the caldera that forms the eastern edge of today's city. In 1860, Laughlin married Sarah Jane Hutton and they started living in what is now downtown Auburn. In 1870, John Sutter discovered gold at Sutter Creek and quickly began developing it into a prosperous mining town. By 1875, Sutter had developed some 50 buildings including a hotels, stores, schools, churches and a millinery shop. On July 14th that year, he named his new town after himself – Auburn (after Ashtabula County in Ohio). For most of its history until World War II, Auburn was an agricultural center with large herds of cows and pigs prodigiously grazing on rich old Agricultural land which are still visible today on hills around downtown or along major thoroughfares like I-5 or US 101. Some notable landmarks located here include: The Masonic Temple (1876), The Dow Jones Cyclopedia Company Building (1907), King Cotton’s Warehouse (1898), Gertrude Ewing’s House (1911) & Augustus Baldwin Wright House (1920). During World War II much activity took place within the nearby Naval Ammunition Depot which housed over 200 workers engaged in production from 1942-1945; later known as Grandview Arsenal National Military Park[1]. Located adjacent to Interstate 5 at milepost 163,[2] this munitions manufacturing complex produced everything from artillery shells to torpedoes during wartime –resulting in numerous local businesses being destroyed or forced out of business due to government competition.[3] Today remnants can be seen scattered throughout downtown while more recent development has taken hold across several blocks north towards Interstate 5/I-710 interchange.

Auburn, California was founded on December 29th, 1849 by James K. Polk and Mary Anna Blanchard. The city was named in honor of General George C. Marshall who was the first U.S. Secretary of War and one of the founders of the United States Military Academy at West Point. The city's first post office opened in 1850. The city saw its peak growth from 1860 to 1870 due to the gold rush and the construction of railways which made Auburn an easier place to get around. However, Auburn's prosperity slowly declined after that until the beginning of World War II when it became a major military base for the Allies
