In response to this discovery, two lumber mills were built near town: one by John Cushman in 1857 and another by Wm Hodge & Sons in 1860-1861 just south of modern day downtown Atwater. This led to development along Main Street including many businesses that remain today such as IGA Supermarket (opened since 1955), Pacific Gas and Electric Company (now State Grid) Headquarters Building, CAIRI University Center -formerly Islamic Community Services Of America -(still open), AT&T Bell Laboratories Headquarters (), Allis Chalmers Brewery (), Masonic Lodge No 6 (), First Congregational Church () and several residences (). George Atwater was born in 1817 in what is now central New York City and emigrated with his family to San Francisco Bay Area in 1846. He worked his way up through local merchant ranks until he founded Atwater dry goods store on December 13, 1853 with one hundred dollars capitalization as a small operation dealing primarily in flour and notions for local farmers. By 1861, Atwater had built a successful business that ranked second only to Montgomery Wards grocery store among Bay Area merchants when it opened its first door on Market Street in downtown San Francisco The early years atatwater were difficult for George Atwaters descendants who had toiled hard just like their ancestors before them Nevertheless over time they managed to maintain a presence here despite all odds In 1905 after more than 50 years they sold out their interest here finally retiring back home They passed away leaving behind more than 6000 residents inside this little corner of California
The Atwater area in California was first settled by the Ohlone people in the earlyhistoric period. The first white person to arrive in what is now Atwater was Captain John Crespi, who landed on November 10, 1821, on Rancho Rincon de Santa Margarita y Los Suenos. He established a Spanish mission here and named it San Francisco de Asís. In 1835, during the Mexican-American War, General Manuel López de Santa Anna built his army's second headquarters at this site after he had been driven out of Mexico City. A year later, on December 6th, 1836, General Samual Tubbs occupied San Francisco and set about rebuilding it as a military garrison town. By 1840, Atwater had become an important citrus farming community with around 100 residents. In 1853-54 Felix Peralta made an unsuccessful attempt to build a railroad through Atwater Valley and nearby De Anza Pass so that he could sell oranges to American settlers down south. The discovery of oil in California in 1901 led to increased industry and development along the Central Coast Highway including at Atwater with new gas stations being built everywhere from Fullerton (in Southern California) to Stockton (in Northern California). The population of Atwater began increasing rapidly as result; by 1910 its population was over 1,500 people and it included a schoolhouse and two churches. However World War II brought much destruction to the town; many homes were destroyed or taken over by Army troops during their occupation of Southern California until local officials were able to put together a plan for rehabilitation which succeeded in 1945 when the town reverted back into its pre-war condition - again becoming an agricultural community with around 500 residents
