In 2016, Mayor Sergio Cabrera announced that they would be purchasing 1,000 tasers from Canadian company Orion Firearms Corporation. This move comes after years of deliberations and discussion about whether or not to purchase any new weaponry within the city limits.Mayor Cabrera notes that having such a weapon available will provide "a deterrent to crime" and help "prevent violence from spreading." Atwater is located on Raccoon Creek, about 15 miles northwest of downtown Fresno and 10 miles east of Kingsbury City. The creek flows through Atwater Canyon, which has several falls and a quarry that produced water for irrigation and drinking in early days. The first recorded mention of Atwater was in 1786 when it was called "Athawa" by Captain William Bligh while he was exploring the coast along the San Joaquin River. In 1847, John Cockerill established an adobe sawmill here on Raccoon Creek near present day Union Elementary School facilities which still stands today employed by local farmers to produce lumber. In 1870, George Atherton organized a school district here with land donated from James Sennett who also owned property nearby in what is now known as north Fresno County. In 1892, Atherton donated 8 acres (3 ha) to the town for use as a public square, which became known as Atherton Park after him and his wife Alice founded it in 1893. In 1916, Atwater had its first post office with Gertrude Hildebrandt as agent; however, this office closed down due to lack of business during World War I. On October 7, 1919 mail arrived at Atwater from all over America via wagon train using an oldCalifornian route finally opened up by Interstate 80 just 2 years later on November 3rd! On May 3rd 1915 Mrs Justice Darling(later Dame) delivered her final sermon at St Paul's Presbyterian Church before moving into her new home across Union Street from our current General Store building where she preached until her death four years later on October 9th 1946 followed by services inside until Monday evening when she left again for good at 7pm each weekdays until her decease two months later!!!!!

By 1930, many aspects of local life had changed including the growth of professional football teams (the Los Angeles Rams were founded in that year) which led to increased tourism within Atwater County and helped spur growth in both agriculture and manufacturing sectors across the county again; however some challenges still remained such as high unemployment rates during World War II due to wartime production changes within economy nationally but also locally due to lack thereof elsewhere within region
