The Atwater scopes were developed in the early 1800s by Captain John Atwater and his brother, David. The company that produced these scopes was called "Atwater & Sons." These scopes were used by fishermen and hunters all over California. In 1876, Captain Atwater died and his son, Samuel, took over the company. The Atwaters continued to produce top quality telescopes until the late 1800s when they stopped making them. The first telescope to be made in Atwater was a 12-inch refractor called the "Wichita" in 1892. This telescope was built for use by Professor Wm. Fechtel of Caltech (later UC Berkeley). By the end of the 19th century, most of California had been explored and it became clear that there were many new target areas for hunting and fishing. However, despite this new discovery potential, Vail found no market for his products so he decided to discontinue production in 1903. In 1925, Dr. George Eames purchased some of Vail's assets and restarted production under the new name "Atwater Telescope Company." This company continued making high quality telescopes until about 1930 when it ceased operations due to World War II shortages of materials. During World War II, much of Atwater was destroyed but fortunately enough material remained to rebuild most of the buildings including the manufacturing plant which reopened in 1946 as a research center for astronomy programs at UC Berkeley (now known as Caltech). After World War II ended, there were again lacklustre sales opportunities so David Atwater decided to retirement from business in 1951。 Consequently Samuel Atway merged with Dr. George Eames' old firm producing telescopes once again under their original name: "Atwater Telescope Company". Unfortunately this factory closed down circa 1975 leaving only a few legacy telescopes left across various states such as Oregon (the last being an 8-inch Meade model C8) up until now!

Atwater, California is a city in the San Joaquin Valley of northern California. The population was 7,865 at the 2010 census. Atwater was founded in 1853 by Captain George Atwater and his brother-in-law, Nathaniel Hawthorne. It became an incorporated city on December 12, 1914. Captain George Atwater's older brother Isaac had moved from Stockton to Atwater in 1847 and built a cabin there which he used as a trading post until 1850 when he opened a store on the banks of the Sacramento River called The Bayou House. In 1851 Captain George Atwater married Julia Gaylord Grant who was also from Stockton and they started trading at The Bayou House. They bought land east of town in 1852 and started building what would become their house which they named "The Hawthorne". In 1860 they sold their house to Drury Lane Oil Company for $15,000 becoming one of the first oil companies in California. In 1861 Captain George Atwater met Lillie Duyckinck who was living with her parents near Sacramento and she proposed marriage to him but he refused because he wanted to stay in California with his wife. Lillie Duyckinck later changed her mind about wanting to marry someone else after meeting Captian George's younger brother Nathaniel Hawthorne who she thought would be more interested in marrying her thanCaptian George did. On July 10th 1862 CaptianGeorge married Lillie Duyckinck at City Hall where over 150 people were present including Governor Richard Goodwin Manuel Alvarado Mrs Fenton Mr Wm Higginson Judge Hezekiah Sweetman Asa Sutter Hiram Bingham Joshua Chamberlain John Bigelow Sr that day making them both citizens of Los Angeles County while still living within their respective hometowns."Atwater: A history" By Donahue Pugh They had two children; Charles Augustus (1863-1942) and Alice Wheeler (1866-1946). With this new status they began exchanging mail with people throughout southern California starting arelation that would last until 1920. They also operated a ferry service between los Angeles County and points north for many years.

Captain Geroge Atwaters death caused great sadness among those living nearby as it left his widow handling most of the businesses associated with The Hawthorne which continued operations until 1888 when Mrs Geroge passed away leaving sons Charles Augustus Jr & Alice Wheeler running it together until 1924 when Charles Augustus Jr died suddenly leaving Alice Wheeler as sole proprietor.

After captain Geroge's death Mrs Geroge divided assets among her five children resulting in Charles Augustus Jr receiving $25,000 dollars while Alice Wheeler received nothing.
