Atwater is a city in Southern California, located on the Atwater Peninsula. It was founded on October 1, 1864 by George W. Atwater and his family as their Rancho Atwater de la Hacienda. The City of Atwater was incorporated on November 3, 1865. The first post office in Atwater was established on December 2, 1865. The city is named after George Washington Atwater and it is one of only two cities in Los Angeles County that were not founded by Spanish settlers—the other being Beverly Hills. George Washington Atwater had been born in 1815 at the Rancho Lomas de Santa Ana near Sylmar, California to John Jacob Astor and Justine Biddle Astor; his father owned an extensive ranch near Pasadena which he sold to Captain GeorgeWesley Atwater in 1837. Washington's paternal grandfather also purchased land around Sylmar from Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo for $2,500 In 1850, surveyors traveled through what is now called southern Los Angeles County and came up with a proposal for a new town called Maywood or possiblyville because of its high altitude (above sea level). In 1854, General José Castro recommended that the Ulysses S. Grant Administration name a new town specifically for miners who had struck it rich veinearing claims along San Pedro Creek; this suggestion was finally approved and laid out as Glendale by André-Jacques Conte on November 5th of that year . . . After further surveys were made throughout southwestern Los Angeles County during 1861-1863 they decided to create an entirely new district outside of Greater Hollywood known as Riverside which would include all present day Orange County east of Altadena creek including most present day Huntington Park On October 1st 1864 Mr G WAtWater set out from Escondido with 4 boys aged 11 years old (1st generation) & 10 years old son James Agermanwadge 6 months old & baby brother Arthur Crayton age 2 ½yrs old
