In 1862 Atwater succeeded his father as president of CPR; during his presidency he developed many new rail transportation methods that helped make Southern Californians more dependent on manufactured goods than their Northern counterparts. He also increased public education across America by founding numerous schools such as Stanford University and UC Berkeley. After leaving office, Atwater devoted himself entirely to philanthropy; within five years he had founded more than 100 charities including The John Dutton Fund which supported famine relief programs around the world; The American Red Cross; The Salvation Army; and several hospitals including one established at Sutter’s Mill near Stockton (now part of Sacramento).
