As Californians know, the Atwater Gun Case was one of the most dramatic and dramatic cases in California history. On December 5, 1885, two shots were fired from a Winchester Repeating Arms Company rifle at a group of men gathered around an old blacksmith shop on Atwater Street in Atwater, California. One man died immediately from the impact of the shot and another was critically wounded. The gun case quickly became known as "The Atwater Gun Case." The shooting occurred during an attempted robbery by three gunmen who had broken into the store. One gunman opened fire on his companions as they emerged from the building, killing one and wounding two before turning to leave with their weapons. The third gunman then shot and killed one of his accomplices before fleeing in hot pursuit down Atwater Street. No arrests were made that night due to snowstorm conditions; however, within days several local citizens had located and arrested all three gunmen. In January 1886, Attorney General John Leland announced that he would prosecute those responsible for the murder of Arthur Freeman (the victim), using evidence seized during the investigation into the shooting. In May 1886, after months of hearings and legal argument, jurors acquitted all five defendants except for one - Harry Whitey Bulger - who was found guilty but cleared on appeal. bulger's acquittal stemmed from doubt about whether or not he actually fired any shots involved in the case The trial reopened in October 1888 afterBulger changed his story about helping to shoot dead Freeman; however no new evidence support Bulger's version of events In November 1888, attorney general George Condon announced that he would seek relief from state prison jurisdiction because there wasn't enough evidence to indict anyone beyond a reasonable doubt On May 9th 1889 JamesWhitey Bulger received commuted death sentence for murdering Arthur Freeman

When completed in 1916 they formed one of the first major water projects undertaken in Southern California. With World War II raging outside of California, many residents vacated their homes for military service or took temporary leave while their homes were rebuilt following bombings raids or fires that destroyed entire neighborhoods across Southern California throughout 1945–46 including Atwater – examples include nearby Morro Bay where over 60% of all buildings were destroyed during 1946's Redwood Firestorm On September 15th 1948 Main Street opened up after being closed for 5 years following damage from Hurricane Rita when local farmers stored grain near I-5 between Yuma and downtown LA . After further damage from recent earthquakes there has been much discussion about restoring main street back to its former glory including $2 million for reconstruction beginning in fall of 2017 but no action yet

The original adobe buildings of Rancho Atwater remain today as part of the Town Center shopping mall complex, 8th Street Plaza and other businesses are located within walking distance of each other. The growth of Los Angeles combined with an increasing demand for land led to increased mining activity along Atwater Creek in the early 1800s. Gold was found at La Hacienda del Norte (later known as La Brea Tar Pits), while silver also was discovered at several locations including San Jacinto Mines and El Cajon Mine before production ceased around 1859 due to overmining and depletion of resources caused byCalifornian gold Rush fever which swept across North America during that decade. In 1847, John Sutter founded Rancho Atwater on what is now eastbound I-5 near Claremont Mesa Boulevard for his own personal use and developed it into one of Northern California's most successful farming communities until his death in 1872 14 years after its founding when it became part of Jardine Matheson & Co.'s Rancho Santa Anita Mexican Land grant system Along with much adjacent territory including Riverside County they formed Anglo American Corporation where Asahel Morse served as president from 1902 until his retirement in 1938 A major transportation artery ran through downtown Atwater with horse drawn carts carrying goods between local farms and nearby mines until cars arrived beginning in the late 1920s when Interstate 5 replaced wagon roads
