In 1909, Atwater Elementary School was founded and soon became home to one of the most popular gun ranges in California. That same year, President William McKinley made it a law that all Americans be given an arms permit within ten days of becoming a U.S. citizen. This law allowed people from all over America to purchase firearms and shoot at targets on public property in order to improve their shooting skills. Today, Atwater is known for its diverse firearm industry and prolific target shooting community which continues today with new members being welcomed each week!

In Atwater, California, the first gun target in the area was an old adobe brick building located at 4202 Old Spanish Trail. The location served as a rifle range and post office from 1857-1859. In 1861, Atwater became a city and the first town in California to be governed by a City Council. The first real gun range in Atwater was established on South Main Street in 1865 by General John C. Frémont and his brother-in-law William Tecumseh Sherman. The original targets were some of Frémont's horses being shot at close range while they grazed on nearby hills. In 1868, the Los Angeles & San Francisco Railway built a line through Atwater and started offering passenger train rides to downtown LA from its tracks north of town. This provided an excellent opportunity for people to shoot at targets out their front door without having to leave their homes! As more people began traveling to LA for work or pleasure,gun ranges across the state quickly sprang up to meet their needs. By 1890 there were over 60 shooting ranges operating in California! During World War II, many of the smaller Rifle Ranges were closed due to wartime regulations but larger ones like Camp Perry continued operation until 1946 when they were consolidated into one center near downtown LA under American Gun Manufacturing (AGM) ownership and management

When the American Revolution began in 1776, the British Parliament had no choice but to pass a series of laws that limited the right of colonists to bear arms. These laws were called the Gun Bill and it required all citizens between the ages of 18 and 25 to obtain a license from their local authorities to own or purchase any firearm. This law also taxed gun ownership in order to help fund military operations. The Gun Bill was repealed in 1835, but not before causing much controversy.
The Atwater, California area was first settled by the Ohlone people in the late 18th century. A mission, San Francisco de Asís, was established in 1776 and the first white person to arrive in what is now Atwater was Lorenzo De La Hoz on July 24, 1781. The area became part of Alta California in 1821 when Mexico ceded it to Great Britain. In 1846, Atwater became part of Nevada Territory when that territory was created from parts of Arizona and New Mexico. On January 3, 1850, Nevada became a state and Atwater became part of it. In 1959, Atwater incorporated as a city and has since grown into one of Southern California's most populous cities with over 200,000 residents.
