Gun slings have been a part of Atwater history for many years. On July 4, 1859, the first gun sling in Atwater was put together by George H.B. O’Malley and his son-in-law, John Fenton. It consisted of an old rifle sling with a piece of cloth stretched over one end to act as a Propeller and was used to shoot targets from a distance. In 1862, J.D. “Doc” Johnson began using gun slings to take advantage of the new San Francisco Bay Bridge shooting range located on Post Road east of town. He would place his rifle on the back seat of his wagon and drive it across the bridge into Marin County where he would set up shop at the beachside inn called The Golden Gate Hotel and shoot at targets set up in several locations around town including Fort Point on Sausalito Island and Point Reyes Station on Half Moon Bay (now known as Monterey Pier). In 1865, Doc won first prize at a shooting contest sponsored by the Board of Supervisors attended by Governor Richardson with an improved muzzleloader made by Drury & Co., makers of Winchester ammunition. In 1869-70, Major General Edwin Vail took possession of Camp Mills which lay near Atwater Cove on Anacapa Island about 12 miles offshore from town limits. The camp functioned as garrison duty for USS Constitution (1865), USS Monitor (1868) and USS Maine (1893). From here they could fire upon ships venturing within striking distance while anchored off shore or while underway between ports or visits to local villages ashore… Thirteen cannon were mounted aboard Constitution during her visit to Anacapa but no shot was fired from them because there was no ship dock available close enough to discharge projectiles safely! For nearly fifty years Gunnery Sergeant First Class Clyde Dorman led Gunnery School Instruction Squadron 2nd Division at Camp Mills teaching basic marksmanship skills to Naval aviators adjacent toUSS Constitution Dockyard until his retirement in 1993… A commemorative plaque honoring him was erected next door in 1995..

In 1876, at the urging of George Catherwood (the founder of Catherwood Ranch), Mayor John Smedley petitioned the state legislature to create an incorporated town with a school and meeting hall. On October 3, 1876, Atwater incorporation was granted with a populationof 10 residents. The first election for town officers were held on November 11 that year; six citizens were elected to two-year terms. In 1886, when Jerry Dyer founded Dyer's Clothing Store in what is now North Park Avenue near Eastside Boulevard., Atwater became his business base. By 1907 it had become one of Southern California's leading clothing stores. Dyer also donated land for Old Town Hall which served as headquarters for both the city government and local businesses from 1909-1911 before being moved to its current location on First Street in 1911 During World War II, many jobs were created in Aircraft production at nearby Fullerton which led to growth in Atwater during that time including new housing developments such as Crestline Drive and Eagle Ridge Drive . After World War II ended there was slow growth until new industrial development arrived starting with Chevron Corporation’s plant opening in 1981 followed by other companies like Intel Corporation followed by major reclamation projects such as IHOP restaurant addition later known as Harbor Freight Depot making it one large mixed use redevelopment area called "Atwater City Centre". This made Atwater an attractive place to live with all sorts of services close at hand including hospitals/medical centers/spas etc...
