Atwater, California was founded in 1853 by George Atwater and his wife, Mary. The city was named for their father, Capt. Nathaniel Atwater, who had helped build the town on the north side of San Francisco Bay. The first post office in Atwater was opened in 1854. In 1861, the Atwaters sold their holdings in the city to a group of investors led by Benjamin Fenton. Over the next few years, various businesses were established in and around Atwater including a millinery business, a grocery store, and an insurance company. On October 15, 1865, Byers Dam collapsed during construction of Interstate 5 near present-day Fremont County; as a result of the collapse, many people lost their homes and businesses along with their agricultural land. The death of Capt. Nathaniel Atwater due to injuries received during World War II led to increased development within Atwater over time as developers popped up all over Northern California looking for new opportunities to exploit natural resources or create new markets for their products. By 1987 there were more than 100 businesses located within atWater's 4 blocks radius; some that have still been in operation today such as Macy's department store which opened its doors on December 15th 1907 and is one of only two stores remaining from that date inside the City limits today (the other being Pacific Gas & Electric Building at 6th Street). In recent years much attention has been given to efforts underway to clean-up downtown Ashington after it became clear that runoff from restaurant parking lots was polluting local water supplies which results in loss of jobs and tax revenue for Ashington residents while also contributing significantly to air pollution across northern California. While progress has been made towards cleaning up downtown Ashington it will be several decades before any significant impact can be seen on water quality or tourism within Atwater itself
