The City of Atwater experienced rapid growth during the 1920s and 1930s due to its location on the Central Coast between San Jose and Sacramento. However, during World War II, large numbers of Japanese Americans were interned at Camp Shafter outside of San Francisco and much of their housing and businesses were destroyed or taken over by American forces. Some residents returned to their former homes after the war but most left again during the 1950s when more jobs became available in San Francisco than anywhere else on the Peninsula
Atwater was founded in 1854 by John Atwater and his wife Anna. It was the first city in California to be established on the Rincon Aqueduct. The city grew rapidly, becoming one of the largest in California. In 1912, Atwater was renamed San Francisco.
