In 1821, Mexican soldiers under General Jose Armijo burned down what was left of La Conchita Hill, which local residents rebuilt as the centerpiece of their town square. In 1836, Atascaderos neighbor Don José Vasquez built a windmill that still stands today next to the Catholic church in downtown Atascadero. A post office was established here in 1841 and remained open until 1917 when it became part of Fresno. During World War II, Atascadero served as an airfield for bomber planes flying over Fresno and nearby Tulare County. Afterward, much development took place within the boundaries defined by Almaden Air Force Base which encompassed much of adjacent Butte County and also included portions of Merced and Mono counties including Atascadero itself. It wasn't until 1975 when then-Mayor Manuel Sanchez decreed that all stores within city limits must close at 5 p.m., making nightlife more accessible to locals without having to leave their homes or go out into society during those hours. This ruling represented another attempt by Mayor Sanchez to create stability after years during which many businesses had closed around 5 p.m., leaving people stranded or have no choice but to walk outside during those days if they wanted food or entertainment options other than shopping malls located closer to 5 p.m.. In 2006, Mayor Sanchez announced plans for redevelopment inside Almaden AFB across from downtown Ascalado with hopes that this would bring new life not only to downtown Ascalado but also help promote economic development throughout the entire community surrounding Almaden AFB while creating jobs for both locally hired employees as well as contractors working on various projects at Almaden AFB itself - ultimately reducing commute times between Downtown Ascalado and Almaden AFB by up to 25%. However following public outcry over proposed changes made within Almaden AFB itself - such as increasing fuel prices associated with increased military activity there - Mayor Sanchez abandoned his plans for redevelopment entirely just two years later despite predictions from experts that this type of redevelopment could lead to job losses for local businesses near DTAs edge while creating traffic backups on highway 99 northbound near I-5 .
The Atascadero area was first settled in the late 1800s by ranch hands. The first buildings were built on the Rancho Atascadero land, and the town began to grow around them. In 1902, Atascadero incorporated as a city. The original town center was located near what is now Market Street and Broadway. By 1910, business had begun to expand out of the small town, and a new downtown was constructed. As Atascadero grew, it became an important stop on the Southern Pacific Railroad. It also attracted many immigrants from Europe and Asia who worked in various businesses in and around the city. In 1916, Mayor John Haggerty declared October 12th "Atascaderano Day" in honor of all that had made the city so successful over its years. In 1938, Atascadero was destroyed during a fire that burned for days across much of downtown. Despite this setback, the city continued to grow rapidly through World War II until it reached its current size by 1954. During this time period, many famous people lived or worked in Atascadero including Jack London (the author of "The Call of THE WILDERNESS"), Alice Paul (the singer/songwriter behind "I Can't Quit You Baby"), Don McClean (the guitarist for The Ray Charles Singers), and Woody Guthrie (the folk artist who helped popularize country music). After World War II ended, Atascaderingo experienced some sub-par economic times which led to several closures of local businesses throughout the 1970s and 1980s until finally reaching its current state today due largely to advances in technology which has allowed for more job growth within atscadorano than ever before!
