Today, Atascadero remains largely rural with a few businesses and residences scattered around its center square which contains a civic building housing government offices as well as a library and several restaurants/bars/.

Atascadero is a city in the San Joaquin Valley of California, United States. The population was 103,711 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Atascadero River east of Bakersfield and west of Fresno. The first Europeans to visit Atascadero were traders from Sacramento who traveled upriver in search of trade goods with the Mono people. They called it "Tahoe". One account reports that an American Indian named Tahoe killed two Spanish men, who were trying to cross the river. A party led by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo discovered and explored parts of what is now California in 1542-43 when he and his brother Francisco de Borja sailed down the CA Current on their way back from Mexico City. In 1769, José Antonio Altamira became one of the first white men to explore coastal California when he journeyed ashore near Santa Cruz on Isla de Mujeres. He named this island "Atacama" after his guide at Huajuapan, Atanasio López de Zúñiga y Arroyo (died 1695). In 1847, Manuel Nieto added Rancho Rodeo to these holdings near modern day Anaheim Hills; part of rancho had been purchased by John Sutter before his discovery and settlement of Northern California in 1839 which made Atascadero a part of Sutter's new land grant system The town site was platted as Rancho Los Alamos on February 21st, 1852 by contract between Captain John Waddell (of New York) and Gabriel García Márquez Sloat during Governor Goodwin Coleman's official visit to San Fernando Valley January 9th 1850 #2 Mission Santa Clara Female Orphan Asylum built for girls opened in 1865 $5 per head slave rent paid out monthly until emancipation In 1898 An Act was passed giving all citizens male or female free choice over voting I think this makes it illegal today but I'm not sure
