He continued to operate The Arsenal until his death in 2002. In 1978, Bob Fenton opened another store called “The Rifle Place” which also became an important source of soft gun cases for shooters throughout California. Fenton operated The Rifle Place until his death in 2000. Finally, Rick Ziegler opened a store called “The Shooter’s Store” which also became an important source of soft gun cases for shooters throughout California from 1989 to 1999 when he closed it due to health issues. Atascadero, located in San Luis Obispo County, California is one of the most historical communities in all of Southern California. The community was founded by Juan Rodríguez de Montoya on December 3, 1769 as a small rancho called Rancho Atascadero. It became an incorporated town on July 18, 1850. The first post office in Atascadero was established on October 8, 1850. By 1860, there were over 100 residents and the population had increased to over 1,500 by 1870. The town had a sawmill and grist mill which both closed in 1865 due to competition from more efficient mills operating near San Francisco. However, the local woolen industry continued until it went out of business in 1903. In 1907-1909 a new water tower was built and became known as "The Tower". It served as the town's main water source until 1954 when the Town decided to get their own water system. During World War II AtascadERO served as a training center for American forces stationed in North Africa and Europe. Several industries that thrived during this time such as munitions manufacturing and aircraft construction (Boeing) are now long gone but their legacy can still be seen today through modern day neighborhoods like Mission Hills and Midtown atyca

The first post office was established in 1853. In 1865, Atascadero incorporated as a city. In 1902, the city annexed the neighboring towns of Rancho Rinconada and Rinconada Vieja.
